Why a Missing Check Valve Made Me Check Every Hansgrohe AirPower Shower Head Sample

One Tuesday in late November 2024, I was at the sample bench with a box no bigger than a shoebox. Inside were two products: a hansgrohe AirPower shower head and a handheld hansgrohe shower head in chrome. We were putting together a submittal for a 24-room inn renovation, and the sales team wanted the paperwork out the next morning.

I’m the person who checks those submittals before they go out. In a normal year I review a couple hundred product line items—samples, proof sheets, final confirmations. I don’t remember exactly what percentage I send back. I wish I kept better records. But I’ve rejected enough first-round quotes to know that most problems don’t start in the factory. They start in the part numbers.

The order was around $16,400. That’s not huge for our warehouse. There were 24 wall-mounted showers, 24 tub/shower combinations, and a few spare parts. The owner planned to open the inn in spring 2025. If something arrived wrong, there wasn’t a big-budget cushion to fix it.

The product that looked too good to double-check

The hansgrohe AirPower shower head was the easy part. It was exactly what the sales rep described: solid, well-finished, with the AirPower symbol printed near the connection. The AirPower effect is one of those things that is difficult to put into a spec. It’s not just the spray pattern. It’s the way the water feels full and soft at the same time—not a hard blast, but a soaking rain.

I couldn’t demonstrate that in an email, so I did the practical thing: I cleaned the chrome face with Sprayway glass cleaner, wiped it dry, and photographed it so the image would at least show no water spots or fingerprints. That’s when I checked the second box.

The approved spec called for a handheld hansgrohe shower head with a check valve. That was the part that made the project code-friendly: a hand shower on a hose can sit below the water level in a tub, and the check valve is the small fitting that stops water from siphoning back into the supply line.

I didn’t catch it from looking at the shower head. The shower head looked identical to what I expected. I caught it because the model number on the spec sheet was one digit different from the model number on the box. One digit was the difference between a “shower head” and a “shower head with check valve.”

Part of me thought, maybe the check valve is in the packaging. I searched the carton. It wasn’t.

It’s tempting to think that a brand name fixes this stuff. It doesn’t. A great brand can send the right product to a distributor, and the distributor can still type the wrong line item into a quote. The problem wasn’t hansgrohe. The problem was the gap between the product everyone assumed and the product actually ordered. That gap is exactly where quality issues live.

The moment I almost ignored

Here’s the thing I’m not proud of: I almost let it go.

The spreadsheet said the total was fine. Quantities matched. Finishes matched. The delivery date matched. Every box had a checkmark next to it. If I had gone with the numbers alone, I would have signed the submittal, and that order would have gone to the jobsite with 24 hand showers that didn’t meet the specification.

I still remember the hesitation. The data said yes. My gut said wait. My gut won because I’ve had too many calls where the customer says, “But the rep told me it was included.” It probably was included in the price. It just wasn’t included in the box.

I called the manufacturer’s rep to double-check whether the “with check valve” version could be substituted before we sent the quote. The office line rolled to a generic message that spent the next few seconds explaining how to set up voicemail. There was no way to leave a message. It was the same feeling as finding a missing part: a small detail that no one had closed off, becoming a problem for someone downstream.

That voicemail thing might sound unrelated. It’s not. When a business hasn’t even set up its voicemail, it tells you something about how carefully the details behind the product have been handled. I don’t assume the worst. I just assume I need to check more carefully before I trust a process.

What we did about it

We did not send the submittal the next morning. We also did not make the customer pay for our error. We corrected the part number, changed the quote to include the correct handheld hansgrohe shower head with check valve, and absorbed the difference. The customer received the revised approval sheet two days later. The general contractor said he probably would have caught the problem during a rough-in inspection. But by then, the change would have been a change order, a delay, and a much bigger price than the part itself.

We also changed our internal form. Now any time a project calls for a hand shower, the order template has a separate line for the check valve. If the hand shower model doesn’t include it, the line stays red until someone explains what will be used instead.

I know this sounds like a small process thing. But the same process keeps a business from doing embarrassing things like sending out a quote with a missing part or hearing a customer call back after installation and leaving a message on a voicemail that nobody has set up.

What I’d tell a designer or contractor

If you are specifying bathroom fixtures for a project, don’t stop at the model number that looks right. Ask: Is the check valve included in the hand shower, or does it come separately? If the person on the other end of the phone is not sure, ask them to open a box and look. That one question saves you from a callback, a stop-work order, or an awkward meeting with the plumbing inspector.

And if a vendor’s phone system is still explaining how to set up voicemail to your customers, take it as a sign. The parts you cannot see are the ones that matter most. I check those parts first.

The small order got the same treatment as a large one. That decision is why we still get the next call. Small doesn’t mean unimportant. It means potential.
